Water Stains on Wood Furniture: What's Fixable and What's Not
July 7, 2026 Β· Henderson Furniture Repair
Water stains are the most common form of furniture damage β and in many cases, the most misunderstood. Some stains can be fixed at home in minutes. Others require professional refinishing. Hereβs how to tell the difference.
The Three Types of Water Stains
1. White Rings (Surface Moisture)
These cloudy white marks sit on top of the finish β the wood underneath is fine. Theyβre caused by moisture trapped in the finish layer.
Fix: Often removable at home. Try a hair dryer on low heat, or apply a small amount of mayo or petroleum jelly to the ring and let it sit overnight. The oils can displace the trapped moisture.
2. Dark Stains (Deep Penetration)
Dark brown or black stains mean moisture has penetrated through the finish into the wood itself. This changes the woodβs cellular structure and colour.
Fix: Professional refinishing is usually required. The affected area needs to be stripped, treated with oxalic acid to lighten the stain, re-stained to match, and refinished. We do this routinely β itβs not a lost cause.
3. Warping and Swelling
When wood absorbs enough water, it expands. Drawers stick, tabletops cup, and joints separate.
Fix: Mild swelling often resolves as the wood dries (slowly!). Severe warping requires professional attention β we can sometimes flatten pieces using controlled moisture and pressure techniques. Joints that separated due to glue failure can be cleaned, re-glued, and clamped.

Real Restoration Stories
We recently restored a 1920s mahogany sideboard that had been sitting in 6 inches of flood water for two days. The legs were black with water damage, the doors wouldnβt close, and the finish was destroyed. After professional drying, structural repair, and refinishing, it looked better than it had in decades β and the insurance claim covered the entire cost.
Donβt assume itβs ruined. Call us at 613-224-2150 for a free assessment.
